Picking out the right plants for your garden can be tough. There are so many gorgeous flowers and shrubs to choose from, and each one has its own unique shape and colour. But what if you want to plant some shrubs that grow fast? That way, you’ll have a full garden in no time! Here are seven of my favourite fast-growing shrubs:
Fast growing plants for a new garden
Shrubs are the perfect choice for a new garden. They can be planted as a hedge or screen, or you can use them to add height and structure to your landscape. There are many different varieties of fast-growing shrubs, so it’s important to know what kind of soil, sun and shade conditions you have before choosing one.
Here are some tips on how to choose the right shrub for your needs:
- Shade-loving shrubs thrive in areas where there is minimal sunlight exposure; they do best when planted near trees or other large objects that block out most direct sunlight from reaching them. Examples include; azalea (Rhododendron spp.), hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla), witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) and viburnum (“Viburnum” species).
- Sun-loving shrubs require full exposure to direct sunlight throughout most hours each day; they should not be planted under deciduous trees or areas that will shade the plant. Examples include; Weigela, Beauty Bush (Kolkwitzia amabilis) and Schip Laurel (Prunus laurocerasus ‘Schipkaensis’) – also known as a Cherry Laurel
Flowering shrubs
Rose
Roses are a classic choice for any garden. They come in an incredible variety of colors and sizes, and they bloom all summer long. There are also a number of different types of roses, from hybrid tea roses (which have large flowers) to miniature versions that are perfect for smaller gardens or containers. It’s best to plant them in full sun or partial shade; if planted in too much shade they won’t bloom as well as they could!
Rhododendron
Rhododendrons are another classic choice for any garden. They come in a wide range of sizes and colors, and they bloom all summer long. There are also a number of different types of rhododendrons, from the smaller Azalea species to the large-flowered hybrids. It’s best to plant them in full sun or partial shade; if planted in too much shade they won’t bloom as well as they could!
Bright leaf colour plants for a new garden
The leaves of these plants are bright and colourful, making them a great choice for adding colour to your garden.
- Beech (Fagus sylvatica), which has pale yellow or golden leaves that turn red in autumn.
- Holly (Ilex aquifolium), with its dark green glossy leaves that stay on the tree all year round if it’s not cut back (you can trim holly into hedges).
- Maple trees such as Acer palmatum ‘Bloodgood’ have red new growth in spring before turning deep green later in the year; they also produce white flowers in late spring/early summer followed by edible fruits that ripen from green through yellow to orange-red by autumn – but don’t eat them unless you know they’re safe!
- Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) produces pinkish-red berries from June until September; these berries are poisonous so don’t eat them either!
With their glossy foliage and brightly coloured flowers, dogwoods make excellent shrubs for ornamental gardens and provide food for pollinators such as bees at flowering time
Autumn leaf colour
Autumn leaf colour is a great way to add interest to your garden in the autumn months, and many shrubs offer this feature.
- Some shrubs have leaves that turn red, orange or yellow as they mature in summer. These are ideal for adding colour when you’re not sure if you’ll get enough rain for flowers to bloom.
- Other shrubs have bright new growth throughout spring that turns into beautiful autumn foliage–a great way to catch visitors’ attention!

- Fast-growing shrubs: These are ideal for a new garden, because they’ll grow fast and make a big impact on your landscape. Some good examples are azaleas, flowering cherries, and hydrangeas–all of which can be pruned into shapes like small trees or hedges.
- Flowering shrubs: If you’re more interested in flowers than foliage (or both), then choose these types of shrubs instead! Blooming plants include viburnums, lilacs, roses and honeysuckles–they come in many different shapes and sizes so there’s sure to be one that fits perfectly into your space!
We hope you’ve enjoyed this list of fast growing shrubs and will be inspired to plant some of them in your own garden. These are the best plants to plant in your garden if you want it to look good quickly.
