Have you got a dark shady area in the garden that you want to brighten up but nothing will grow due to lack of light? Fear not as we have a list of plants that can bring some colour to your shady areas.

Hydrangeas

A great plant for the shade that brings summer colour to any area of your garden. There are many varieties, shapes and sizes fo flowers and many coolurs to chose from. These are tough and resilient and don’t mind the shade

Hosta

Hostas are fantastic shade loving plants that brighten up a border. There are many varieties with different colour foliage and bell like lilac flowers on stalks. They are relatively easy to grow but you do need to watch out for slugs and snails.

Bleeding Heart (white)

All colour flowers of Bleeding Heart (deep pink, light pink and white) plants will tolerate light to moderate shade, but White Bleeding Hearts prefer shade everywhere. Bleeding Hearts require little maintenance, looking after themselves, preferring moist soil, you can add compost in the spring to increase flower load. Bleeding Heart die back in the winter and sprout in early spring.

Foxglove

Foxgloves love light or even deep shade, providing a tall colourful display of flowers from June. Foxgloves die back each winter and come back the following year. They are poisonous to cats and dogs (and even humans) so care should be taken for households with pets.
